Earlier this month, our Patagonia students spent t Earlier this month, our Patagonia students spent three nights in Tamango National Reserve during their first backpacking trip of the semester. Their adventure began just across the Cochrane River from basecamp, hiking upstream into the reserve where they settled in at a beautiful campsite on the shores of Cochrane Lake. Over the next couple of days, the students continued developing their natural history skills, building on knowledge gained in classes with hands-on practice identifying local plants and animals. At the end of the trip, they had their first natural history quiz, putting their naturalist skills to the test. From practicing backpacking to writing their first field journal entries, this first trip to Tamango was a chance to begin a semester of learning about the Aysén region. 🌿🏔️ — A principios de este mes, nuestros estudiantes de Patagonia pasaron tres noches en la Reserva Nacional Tamango, en su primera travesía de mochileros del semestre. La aventura comenzó justo al otro lado del río Cochrane, desde nuestro campamento base, donde el grupo inició una caminata hacia el interior de la reserva hasta llegar al lugar que sería su hogar durante los siguientes días: un hermoso campamento a orillas del lago Cochrane. A lo largo de la travesía, los estudiantes continuaron desarrollando sus habilidades de historia natural, complementando las clases en el aula con actividades prácticas de identificación de la flora y fauna local. También alcanzaron un hito importante: su primera evaluación de historia natural en terreno, donde pusieron a prueba sus conocimientos en los mismos ecosistemas que se han convertido en su sala de clases. Desde caminar y acampar hasta observar, identificar y hacerse preguntas, los días en Tamango fueron una oportunidad para llevar el aprendizaje a la práctica y profundizar su comprensión del mundo natural que los rodea en Aysén. 🌿🏔️ 📸: Maggie Johnson (1-5), Cass Cooley (6)

You are immediately greeted with crisp morning air and an unmistakable chorus of spurfowls calling for the day to begin.” -Jacob Filipkowski, University of Vermont 🦒 Our Botswana cohort has been hard at work conducting wildlife transects, learning practical field data collection strategies, and immersing themselves in the local community.
