Flashback to incredible moments in Taku 🏔️ th Flashback to incredible moments in Taku 🏔️ thanks to @gabe_falcione from the Taku ‘23 program.

As this year’s student team begins their journey, enjoy this glimpse into what their next six weeks will be like. The group will be backpacking and conducting field work in the vast and beautiful Taku Watershed, situated in the most northern reaches of British Columbia. Their work monitoring wildlife populations and surveying remote parts of the territory provides on-the-ground capacity to further the land protection vision of the our long-time partner, the Taku River Tlingit First Nation.

We’re wishing the 2025 crew a summer of meaningful research, breathtaking views, and swim or two!

Updates are in from the field! Wondering what our Updates are in from the field! Wondering what our Mongolia students are up to?

The group spent the night in traditional Mongolian gers by Lake Khovsgol. They got to sample local foods, trying yak yoghurt and butter (urum) for breakfast. They also had the chance to meet an orphaned roe deer that the ger camp is caring for!

Spending spring break in Makgadikgadi Pans was a m Spending spring break in Makgadikgadi Pans was a much needed reset. We had a break from
schoolwork which was nice and also got to explore an entirely new landscape and area. The sunrises and sunsets were out of this world. As a group, our favorite activity was every evening was to walk down to the big salt pan below our campsite and watch the sunset. The range of color within the sunset was incredible, something I will never forget.

@ulasimonsen also has a fantastic student blog post about the Western barn owls that tried to hitch a ride to the Boteti River (link in bio).

Camp life in Dizhana Camp in Mababe, Botswana is s Camp life in Dizhana Camp in Mababe, Botswana is super fun, but also an adjustment! Something really interesting, and also something I never expected, was the need to Hyena proof our campsite every night before bed. Our cohort is split into teams for dinner time cooking and cleaning. Whichever team is responsible for housekeeping that night has to ensure they put the trash bag on top of the car and gather and stack the various wash buckets on a high table. One of our instructors also suggested we bring in our laundry from the farther clotheslines because “you never know.”
Almost every morning, our food pit had been rummaged through. One morning, we woke up, and one of the dish racks with the sponges and dish soap had been drug out into the grass!
