Conservationist... or car mechanic? Sometimes you Conservationist... or car mechanic? Sometimes you have to be both!

The Botswana group conducts research from vehicles, driving transects (pre-determined routes) to sample for wildlife. Since these transects are designed to go through representative areas of the ecosystem, many don't follow roads. All of this off-roading can be hard on the vehicles!

Understanding how to keep the vehicles in working order and address issues is essential to getting fieldwork done. During their first days in the field, Botswana Program Co-Director Dix Kedikilwe led students through a lesson on car maintenance and safety checks, ensuring they had the skills to help care for the vehicles for the rest of the semester.

The Patagonia cohort has been on the ground for tw The Patagonia cohort has been on the ground for two weeks and enjoying learning more about the ecosystem in Chile! 🏔️

The students initially spent time in Coyhaique, getting out for their first natural history lessons in the field. While out on their field excursion, the group met with rangers from La Corporación Nacional Forestal (CONAF) or the Chilean National Forest Corporation. CONAF is one of Round River's primary partners in Chile and the research that students contribute to is based on CONAF's needs and interests.

The group then traveled to Cochrane where their base camp for the semester is. After taking some time to settle in, students have headed out on their first backpacking trip!

“Our new DJI Mini 4k drone was put to work counting cormorant nests, monitoring the spatial patterns of Daurian pika (Ochotona dauurica) colonies, surveying endangered vansemberuu (Saussurea dorogostaiskii) plants, and peering into the waters of the Tengis-Shisged River to look for Siberian taimen (Hucho taimen)– the world’s largest salmon…”

Class next to the river? That’s a normal day for Class next to the river? That’s a normal day for our Botswana cohort 🇧🇼

The group had a great first few days of coursework before heading out into the field. They met our partners from the University of Botswana’s Okavango Research Institute, learning more about wildlife monitoring they’ll be doing and the communities they’ll be working in.

They also tackled setting up their spacious (and somewhat unruly) tents. Everyone is looking forward to research in Khwai - especially for sightings of African wild dog which are abundant in the area!

The group will be in Maun for a few days, orienting themselves and learning more about Botswana's natural history and culture. Next week, they'll head deeper into the Okavango Delta for their first field excursion, completing research transects in Khwai.

More camera trap images are in from our Mongolia t More camera trap images are in from our Mongolia team! They were hard at work this summer hiking to retrieve images for our extensive camera trap grid.

Our camera trap work in the Horidol Mountain Region began in 2018 to support the Ulaan Taiga Special Protected Areas Administration in monitoring large mammal populations. We are particularly interested in populations and distribution of brown bear, roe deer, musk deer, wild boar, wild sheep, ibex, snow leopard, moose, wolf, and wolverine - many of which were caught on the camera traps!

This summer in Taku from the camera roll of @gmkay This summer in Taku from the camera roll of @gmkayano, our immensely talented Student Programs Associate Director 🤩

The Taku River Watershed, where our student teams do the majority of their fieldwork, is a remote and diverse place. It supports all five species of Pacific salmon, steelhead, a healthy grizzly bear population, wolves, woodland caribou, mountain goats, moose, eagles, and migratory birds. Hiking in the Taku, you are treated to mountains, glacially fed rivers and lakes, and major wetlands. Can you imagine unzipping your tent to these views every day?

An incredible highlight from the Mongolia program An incredible highlight from the Mongolia program - catching snow leopards on camera traps for the first time in program history 🐾

As part of their field work, students help maintain an extensive grid of camera traps throughout the Ulaan Taiga Special Protected Area (UTSPA) to support UTSPA rangers in monitoring wildlife. The team hikes out to cameras, replacing batteries and retrieving full SIM cards. Afterwards, they sort through the images collected by the trap, identifying the animal species captured.

This summer's team got the privilege of discovering these images of snow leopards, an elusive and rarely seen species. Capturing these images provides valuable insight into the presence and movement of snow leopards in the UTSPA!
