A looming shadow stood outside our tent, sniffing intensely with glowing green eyes… we made eye contact and I froze in my sleeping bag. The moonlight was the only thing illuminating its silhouette as it ducked its head down and carefully picked up my left shoe before slowly walking off with its prize.

After a few days of classes at basecamp in Cochrane, our group packed our things (minus our tents and back country bidets) and hit the road yet again! This time we went south to Caleta Tortel, a small village situated at the northernmost edge of the Southern Patagonian Icefield.

After an early morning wake up and a dreary (but beautiful) drive South from our basecamp in Cochrane, Anna and I were thrilled when our instructor Felipe pulled up in front of the picturesque campo that was going to be our home for the next week.

At 10:30pm, we stood shining our headlamps to study the front left tire of our Round River rental truck. We had almost made it back to the main road from our transect location in Bahia Jara when a sharp branch punctured the tire.
